Sierra Pacific High School held a student barber challenge where students were able to show off their hair-cutting skills. This event was held on April 27 and May 4 during the students’ lunch period. Students were given the chance to join the challenge as the barbers or the people getting their hair cut, having them face off in a two-day showdown.
This event was inspired by the Barber Challenge held at Hanford High School. They called their event the “Bullpup Blend-Off Barber Competition”. Because of how successful it was at the East Campus, Sierra decided to try the same competition.
Taking place during lunch break, many students came to watch the event as it happened. So many people came to watch and it was difficult to see through the large crowd of students. It was very professionally done and posters were made for each student who signed up as a barber. It was safe to say that the idea was a good idea due to the large interest people took in it as well as the amount of time and dedication it took from not only the adults who set it up but also the students who partook in the challenge. Six participants were competing against each other, each with their own volunteer to have their hair cut. The whole competition was recorded and there were even people there to announce everything that the participants were doing.
Out of the six who participated, three of them were decided as the best of the bunch and were numbered based on their skills. In first place, there was Caihdyn Amile. Second place was Jose Sanchez Lopez and third place was Freddy Navarro. All contestants had some previous experience cutting hair and were able to use that skill set to do better in the challenge.
Jose Sanchez Lopez, the participant who got second place, had said, “I do have previous experience as a barber. I’ve been doing it for three years now and, yes, I honestly feel like the experience helped me be confident in my work for this competition.”
There was also the atmosphere of the competition, which greatly affected the performance of the students. Most would assume that it was stressful having to cut someones hair in less than an hour with so many eyes on you but the competitors begged to differ. The contestants argued that the overall atmosphere was anything but a stress-inducing environment.
Lopez had also stated that, “During the competition, I felt like it was any other ordinary day because of the environment Ruben built around us. So, I want to thank him for making sure everyone was all good and we were all comfortable.”
With how the results turned out this year, it is decent to believe that this competition will be brought back next year. People seemed to really enjoy not only watching the challenge unfold but also participating in it. Maybe next year the competition will be brought up a level and have even more fun aspects for the students of Sierra Pacific High School to enjoy.
