Students should have more time in their breaks to take a breather and recollect their thoughts between classes. Students are forced to sit in cramped classes with people they don’t know for seven hours of their day, yet they only get an hour of time to themselves at max. Even after going home, they are expected to work on homework for extra hours of their day, as well as any other extracurricular activities they have scheduled. With weakened minds and bodies, students are still expected to perform at their best ability and oftentimes, students will find themselves in tough spots because of this. With still maturing minds, students should have more time in their day to free their minds of stress and anything weighing them down.
High school students only receive a ten-minute break and a 50-minute lunch throughout their school day. This gives them very little time to focus on actually relaxing after their classes because they are too worried about finding something to eat so they can get through the rest of the day. The idea of getting food ends up taking most of their time and in most cases, the students don’t get the chance to ease their minds or bodies.
High school students also have a lot to think about, whether it be their current situation or what they plan for the future. They are expected to keep up with all of their work while still trying to find something that they want to pursue in their life, with little to no time to think on their own, without the stress of their grades weighing on them. This is why it is extremely important that they are given a portion of time where they can clear their minds to better prepare themselves for their life ahead.
There is also the factor of overworking and the stress that could be caused by that. Students have to find a way to balance their lives outside of school while also still dealing with the work assigned for class and homework. Having a longer break where they are able to enjoy life as a kid rather than completely focus on work allows them to recollect their thoughts and do better on their assignments.
Breaks not only benefit the students but the teachers as well. Teachers are given the chance to relax and regain their focus so they can continue to teach their students to the best of their abilities. Having a good chunk of time to relax can improve the moods of both student and teacher so that work is done exceptionally well. Giving people the breaks they need to get through the day doesn’t delay the amount of work that will be done but instead creates a better mood where the work will be done at an even better level and rate.
With all of the benefits of having a good break on a rough day, it is clear that students and teachers should be given a longer break, even if it is only by 15- 20 minutes. If it is counted upon to have those at school to be at their best performance, a moment to themselves is important to keep it that way. This ensures that stress levels will be lessened and that the positive effects will make the work being done of a much better quality.
