Out of 10 young adults coming out of highschool in California three of them go attend a California community college said by Foundation for Community Colleges from a survey in 2018 to 2019. Many fields that are offered in community colleges can make someone twenty thousand dollars more compared to not going to community college. These associate degrees and one year degrees are much more valuable than just having a high school diploma.
Community colleges also offer many options that aren’t only stopping at the certification and or associates. Students can go on to a four year college by completing their general education at a community college for two years which is more affordable than going to a four-year college for all four years.
When students attend a community college they are asked if their plan to transfer or only attend the two years in community college and then start work immediately after. If they are unsure of what to major in college they don’t have to pay the enormes college tuition or buy expensive books there they can go to community college and do their general education which is the exact same in college but less expensive. On average community college tuition is 10 times lower than college tuition, according to the National Society of High School Scholars or the NSHSS article on “Community college vs University Pros and Cons. The classes are also smaller and more doable compared to a four year college that has over two hundred students minimum in each class. From the same article the NSHSS also wrote that due to universities having larger student bodies their classes are in the hundreds not allowing for personalized learning and feedback from the professor.
If students are busy with life and can’t afford to go to classes everyday of the week or at the standard morning to afternoon time the classes are open, a community college is much more flexible compared to a normal four-year college. The clases aside from when students take them aren’t different compared to the same classes offered at a four-year college with the same course. In fact all the people teaching at community colleges are also qualified professors who could teach at a standard college as stated by “Should I Teach at a Community College or University” by Study.com.
Community colleges do come with benefits but there are also cons that come with all the pros. The cons are that students attending community college are not as excited and try as much as other students in a four-year college or university. The students attending community college are sometimes right out of highschool to college but there are still a lot of adults who have lives and kids already who will also be attending the same classes. In total, counting community colleges and college, one out of every five students in college have a child according to a 2015 to 2016 study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics.
Another con that comes with coming to college is that they don’t offer as many programs or educational opportunities as a four-year college and or university. But this issue can be solved by simply going to community college for general education and transferring over to a four-year college or university of the student’s choice with a guaranteed spot forty percent of community college students tend to transfer according to an article written by Community college review Why 60% of Community College Students Never Transfer.
These cons to community college arent cons at all living in a dorm with strangers doesn’t sound fun to most people and people attending the community college and not being fully engaged also happens in everyday life it’s no different from people in a four-year college not listening to the professor.
There are many situations that a person could be in from being a fresh out of high school student not sure what their next step in life is. A person already in the workforce wanting to get a better career, or even a student who wants to go to a college but doesn’t want to pay their expensive tuition and courses. Community college is the best choice for these individuals and many more there are near to none in the cons department of attending college the only thing students will be giving is their time.
