Many students every year often ask the same question. Why is this class so difficult? They blame themselves for not studying or not paying enough attention in class but it may not be their fault it could be the teacher. Though the majority of the time it’s the students who haven’t studied enough. But there are a few cases where the teachers are at fault.
Most of the time the teachers are labeled as bad teachers due to them being stricter than others and expecting more participation from the students. But this is a double edge sword. When a teacher is strict and passionate about their subject it will come through in their teachings and the students will be more passionate about the subject as well. But if they are strict and don’t care for their subject, only the students that are used to studying alone would succeed while the others will struggle in silence. A common pattern witnessed in these teachers who aren’t the greatest is that they hate their students and/or subject. They go into the class with no motivation and are already negative which in turn makes the students negative in some way and end up not learning.
There do in fact exist good teachers. There are teachers in the world that make students appreciate the subject or school in general. From personal experience, multiple teachers each year have been amazing and it shows in student grades that people pay attention in those classes.
What these teachers did that made the learning experience fun was that they made it fun. Whenever students would walk into a classroom with these teachers they would be smiling or in a good mood and greeting all the students. They make students feel welcomed and don’t judge them or treat them any differently from other students. These are also the same teachers that are truly passionate about the subject they are teaching or passionate about seeing their students succeed while having fun. A personal experience that many shared was in freshman year when the math teacher was a very nice down to earth guy who never made students feel like they were behind but instead would work with them to show that they were confused on a part that was confusing and that it’s alright. He tricked us into thinking math was fun for many freshmen including myself.
But teachers that go against these ideal characteristics also exist such as teachers who aren’t as welcoming and or friendly. There are teachers who are extremely strict or mean which makes students afraid of failing. But in doing so they are still good teachers though at the moment every time a quiz comes around students get very anxious and nervous at the end of the semester they are always glad they had those teachers. This is true since I’ve had my share of strict teachers who had to be strict in order to make us learn properly. This is especially important since these teachers tend to teach higher-level classes or classes that students and teachers can get hurt in if people are messing around.
Teachers do not need to be nice or friendly to be good teachers. To be a good teacher they must simply make the learning environment good enough for the majority of students to pass. There will always be students who complain about teachers for many reasons and use the argument that they are just not good at their job. But at the end of the day, they are meant to show the basics and let the students learn the rest while studying.
