After returning to school from spring break, students were supposed to be welcomed back with a week of fun dress-up days and a spring rally to get back in school spirit. The only issue is the fun part could be scratched off when it comes to the theme of it all and the dress-up days. For the week of April 19-22, Sierra Pacific’s ASB came up with a Bear Bash 2000’s Edition. All around the school campus were posters promoting the dress-up days and the rally but it was confusing as to where they were going with it. The dress-up days that followed were movie day, “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink ”, Adam Sandler day, and a color-coordinated day based on the class ranking on the day of the rally.
With movie day taking place on Tuesday, students were asked to dress up as a movie character from any movie from the 2000s. It has been 22 years since the 2000s and to find something where someone can identify who someone has dressed up as is pretty difficult. The whole idea was to get recognized as a character and that’s why many people dressed up as the same thing. There are too many movies that have been released so there should have been a time range such as 2000’s-2010’s. A movie day is too generic due to the fact that the early 2000s style isn’t much different from the style going around right now. Someone dressed up could be thought to be in their everyday clothes.
Wednesday was “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink”, originating from the movie Mean Girls (2004). It was encouraged to wear anything pink that day but what is the point of having another color day if on rally day they are just going to have to wear another color. If they wanted to include the mean girls part in it since that movie is from the 2000’s, it should have been more specific as to what should be worn so the campus doesn’t just randomly have pink highlighters all over the place in whatever pink tutu’s, scarfs, and headbands they could find.
On Adam Sandler day on Thursday, there was the option to dress up like Adam Sandler, a famous actor, or like him in one of his many movies. People who participated in this dress-up day wore baggy basketball shorts and shirts, tennis shoes, and even sunglasses like Sandler’s if they had them. It was the only day of this week that somewhat matched the overall theme because the 2000s was Sandler’s year to shine where he became very popular. This day would have been by far the best dress up day if they didn’t ask them to dress-up like him in one of his movies considering the other dress-up days before these were movie days. If that was the case might as well have just named the week Bear Bash Movie Edition.
The last one on the day of the rally was a color and class coordinated dress-up day. Underclassmen, freshmen and sophomores, were asked to wear blue and upperclassmen, juniors and seniors, were asked to wear purple. Where did these colors come from and how do they go with the theme of the 2000s? Also, it defeats the purpose of them to assign colors to grade levels when they also ask you to wear the spirit shirts that you could purchase at the student store. Not to mention at the rally the shirts were being given out for free so there was no point in buying one. These shirts were just plain white tee shirts that said “Bear Bash 2000s editions” in the smallest font with green paint splatters just as small as the writing. Where did the green come from? This just makes the students and the colors all over the place so people might as well just have worn what they wanted to.
There should have been more time to sit down and think about a theme that would actually make sense or even look more organized. The 2000’s idea was an okay conception but it was not executed in a nice way. If it wasn’t for all of the posters around campus, some might have thought the rally was paintball themed.
