After two years, the Business Finance Academy from Sierra Pacific High School has held its financial literacy fair in the school gym on May 12, 2022.
The financial literacy is an important event held together by the freshmen of the BFA this year. It specializes in providing information on matters that contribute to business and how it is used in everyday life. Students make and present poster boards, flyers, and brochures. The BFA puts this occasion together in order for students to share with the public what they have learned throughout the year.
School staff, administrators, parents and academy students are all welcome to attend and see what the freshmen students have to offer. Before the event takes place, students work in groups ahead of time, and come up with all the necessary information needed.
Covid-19 has prevented the literacy fair from taking place in the past because of certain restrictions and safety measures the school had to follow. The literacy fair was held again after regulations and precautions have been put in place. No masks were necessary when attending.
One of Sierra Pacific’s business teachers, Mercedes Keath hosted the literacy fair for the first time this year. She was feeling excited and nervous as this event was preparing to take place.
“I made some changes to what had happened before so I’m excited” says Keath. She was also looking forward to seeing the entire freshman business academy class and sharing with others what they have learned.
“I was mostly looking forward to meeting a lot of new people,” says Sierra Pacific freshman student Emily Ponce, who was a part of the literacy fair.
While at the event, people are welcome to view the different materials that include the diverse topics that are going to be talked about by the freshman class. This is where students are given the opportunity to distribute their knowledge of the business topics they have been learning and what it means to be in the academy as this is their first major event as freshmen. Previously the fair was held in a school classroom, but with the large number of students and topics the academy has moved to the gym where it is more spread out.
People that attend such as administrators and teachers ask questions about the student’s topics to view their understanding of what they have been educated on. Student presenters are recommended to dress formally in order to fit the role of a person in a business industry. Every year, high school students from the different grade levels that are in the BFA specialize in their own subject matter with the ninth-grade class having the financial literacy fair as their concept, 10th graders having mock interview day, 11th graders having job shadow/ internship and the 12th graders having dual enrollment.
Throughout the semester, students have learned about business matters in the academy such as savings/checking accounts, wealth, investments, bonds, stocks and other business-related topics that students will be presenting about. Towards the end of the school year, the business teacher along with their students begin to plan for the event. After planning, the BFA finally puts together and hosts their financial literacy fair for the school year.
