Late to class? Don’t worry, Sierra Pacific High School will make sure to sweep you right up to detention. After the school’s recent addition of tardy sweeps students aren’t very happy. Students are being encouraged to arrive on time, which is far from bad.
Tardy sweeps involve picking up all the students who have been locked out of their classrooms when the first bell rings. Students have shown intense dislike towards these sweeps, but they are meant to lower the tardy rate. Ever since the addition of tardy sweeps, students have been arriving to class on time.
When a student arrives late to class, not only do they interrupt the classroom, but they miss out on important information. Tardy sweeps are not meant to serve as a punishment, but rather an opportunity to do better. These sweeps have prevented students from distracting the class, losing out on information, and being late.
Students don’t necessarily like them because they come with detention. Detention is meant to give students a reason not to be late, but also it allows them to see where they went wrong and learn from that. Students also dislike the sweeps because they feel like they are being told what to do. This is not the case. Students are being encouraged, urged, and asked to arrive to class on time. Even before these tardy sweeps came into place, students have been asked to arrive on time, which they have failed to do several times.
The effectiveness of these sweeps come from students being able to practice willingness, urgency, and time management. If students prepare themselves and plan ahead, they show determination and the willingness to learn. They can show that they’re willing to be urgent when it matters most. Making school a top priority starts with wanting to be there. Students have also been able to practice their time management skills by efficiently using the time they’re being given. Instead of wandering around, hanging with friends, or wasting time, students have been able to use the minutes they are given before the first bell rings to get to class.
Skills like these are able to prepare students for future situations, especially when it comes to job interviews or career possibilities where it is crucial to arrive on time. Most if not all jobs require effective time management. Students can use the skills they are learning now and apply them to their future.
Tardy sweeps have allowed for students to make good use of their time. It’s always the same students who show up late to class which proves that they are purposefully wanting to be late. Yes, things happen, there’s traffic jams, waking up late, and other things that students have in mind, but when it’s the same students who are continuously arriving late it’s no longer about the environment the student finds themselves in but about the student. A student who actually wants to be on time will find ways to accomplish that. Tardy sweeps aren’t at all that bad when they’re focusing on ensuring the best for students.
