A sequel to “The Black Phone” was unexpected to most, so when a second movie was released, you could say some people were shocked.
“The Black Phone 2” has been highly rated on nearly every website you visit and there is rarely ever a bad review on it. In the sequel, they sort of took a Freddy Krueger route with a previously dead villain. In this one, the Grabber (villain) comes back to try and murder Finney and Gwen (the main characters) when they visit a church camp called Alpine Lake.
Well, he doesn’t actually come back to life. Gwen has lucid dreams and in these dreams, anything that happens in them can affect her life outside of it. If she was to get her hair pulled in a dream, it would happen outside of the dream. The Grabber started appearing in her dreams on the first night they arrived at Alpine Lake, and this ruined the experience for everybody there.
The movie starts with this dramatic scene which is very eye-opening and shows why this movie is rated R. When Gwen is having dreams about the missing kids at Alpine Lake, all of their deaths are very gory and gruesome. Included in these dreams, it shows each kid writing a letter on the frozen over lake. The letters had spelled out WBH, which were the Grabbers real name’s initials.
We later found out there have been hints to uncover the Grabbers’ crimes. The numbers in the moms dream ended up giving the location of all the murders. Sadly, the numbers were never shown in the movie which leaves the viewer in suspense. Everything with the letters and numbers giving hints about the Grabbers’ crimes was a very interesting turn since its completely different than the first movie.
The movie gets so intense very quickly and it builds suspense. It’s done with creative jumpscares that are genuinely scary unlike other movies. There would also be times where you’d think there was going to be a jumpscare and then the scene would switch and nothing would end up happening. This movie had an unexpected twist and when a lot of horror movies end in a suspected way, it makes “Black Phone 2” stand out.
