More than 100 students tried out this year for the Sierra Pacific varsity cheer team, with only roughly 25 making the cut.
As four year varsity cheerleader Bella Davis stated, “I think it takes spirit, courage, and determination if you want to become a cheerleader here at this school, so many girls try out but if you really stand out to coaches, and prove to them you’re capable of putting this work up until February of 2026, you can do it.”
And that’s what makes Sierra Pacific’s games so lively.
After Tryouts starting in the early March, the team never catches a break. Recently, it finished out football season with a positive attitude moving into the current basketball seasons.
The team also participates in rallies and different fundraisers around Hanford.
Although the sport of cheerleading doesn’t have competitors to go against (Sierra Pacific doesn’t field competitive cheer), there are always cheer and dance camps which they attend and compete against other schools every summer with the Bears having success this year.
Senior cheerleader Genesis Ochoa said cheer gives her a chance to have fun, yet be serious about doing something she loves.
“I think being able to cheer with this team brings me so many opportunities to meet new people,” Ochoa said.
Those opportunities have allowed team members to create bonds with each other and the coaches while cheering on their fellow students compete against other schools.
