What is this award winning game called “Among Us”? “Among Us” is a cute take on the classic murder mystery style games where one to three players are the imposter the players doing the killing and the other players are crewmates the innocents trying to live.
The crewmate’s jobs are to finish tasks that are simple minigames that can range from typing in numbers, following a sequence of patterns and swiping ID cards. While the Imposter’s job is to blend in, not get called out to pretend to be a crewmate, gain their trust later when you’re alone with someone, eliminate them from the game and pin it on someone else.
“Among Us” is available on mobile devices both android and iOS. While also being on consoles and computers.
This game was created back on June 15, 2018 by the developers InnerSloth there early plans for the game was to make a mafia mobile game that you could play in the same room with your friends.
Mafia is a murder mystery type game played in real life where there is are two mafia members that eliminate players and a doctor that can save a player. The original version of “Among Us” would only have one map and no sound effects so the game wouldn’t reveal who the killer was with no doctor mechanic, just killers.
On the first release back on June 15. it was only on ios and android, coming to Steam on pc on Nov 16, 2018. On the Steam records for “Among Us” on release they had a player base averaging 2.3 players and would stay under double digits for the next six months going under the radar.
Due to the pandemic requiring people to quarantine themselves many people got bored and resorted to watching streamers. Through this act, people discovered this fun cheap party game called “Among Us” the game would gain over 130,000 players in September of 2020 and continue to rise.
The core mechanics are simple and easy to pick up with two options either point and click or using WASD and all the tasks being a point and click or drag something somewhere. As the imposter lying is a crucial skill especially if you’re playing with friends you need to be able to fake doing tasks and not being suspicious or sus which is slang for suspicious.
The tasks in the game are simple: a child who can’t read or write could do them but there is a task that has you wanting to just not do it and get through everything else first. This infamous task is, of course, the ID card swipe which is as simple as it sounds. You must swipe a card across a scanner but not too fast or too slow and this factor is what makes most players die due to how precise you have to be to complete it. It takes a while and by the time you’re finished you’re already face to face with a vented imposter.
As a crewmate, the first thing on your mind is who´s the imposter, the liar amongst you and your friends. With your fellow crewmates, you got two options of winning to complete all your tasks or the fun but dangerous route: successfully vote out the imposter without voting out many innocent crewmates who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Your strategy as the imposter is to blend and not stick out while either slowly picking everyone off one by one stealthily or going guns blazing and trying to get as many of your friends as you can each round to put everyone against each other.
When the world was enclosed bored at home with no new games to play with friends “Among Us” stood up to the plate and accomplished just that it’s a fun game to play with friends quick and simple just don’t get to invest you may lose a friend that way.
