Every athlete dreams of standing out on the field, but what truly separates a good player from a great one? For Sierra Pacific’s football team, greatness isn’t just about talent or scoring points. It’s about the dedication, mindset, and teamwork that players bring to every practice and game. Their stories remind us that greatness in football isn’t just about the scoreboard. It’s about the effort, growth, and teamwork that happens behind the scenes.
Luis Godinez, who plays center, shared that what really makes a player stand out is their dedication during practice
“Definitely their work ethic and how hard they try during practice,” he said.
For him, greatness is built through consistent effort when no one is watching. But even the most dedicated players face challenges and keeping their mind on the game.
“If I’m being honest,” Godinez said. “I mainly think about my girlfriend. Other than that, I think about my teammates and how they feel because they also play the game.”
His answer shows how teamwork and personal motivation play a big role in keeping his confidence up, even when things aren’t going as planned.
If he could go back to his first year, Godinez said he’d tell himself to take practice more seriously and learn from the varsity players. Like many athletes, he’s grown through experience and now understands the importance of learning from those who’ve played before him.
Another player, Victor Perez, who plays wide receiver and defensive back, shared similar thoughts about the mental side of the game.
“When I’m having a bad game, I tell myself to still stay confident,” Perez said. His advice to his yonger self is to study the game more. Understanding football deeply, not just playing it, helps him perform better and think like a leader on the field.
When asked about his favorite football memory, Perez said, “Ending the game for the win.”
That moment of pride captures what drives so many athletes: the payoff of hard work, teamwork, and belief in themselves.
For both Godinez and Perez, success isn’t only about winning games or scoring points. It’s about discipline, consistency, and learning from every challenge. “Their attitude,” Victor said simply when describing what separates a good player from a great one. That greatness begins in the mind before it shows on the field.
Football teaches more than just athletic skill. It teaches responsibility, resilience, and leadership. Players like Luis Godines and Victor Perez prove that every practice and every game is a chance to grow stronger, not just as athletes, but as people.
Whether it is staying confident after a mistake, learning from older teammates, or pushing through tough practices, both Luis and Victor show what it means to play with passion and pride. Their stories remind us that greatness in football isn’t just about the scoreboard; it’s about the effort, growth, and teamwork that happen behind the scenes.
