When students are outside during lunch or break at Sierra Pacific, it can be hard to find a place to sit.
That’s why more seats outside are needed order for students to rest during breaks and at lunch. The lack of seating outside makes it even harder to take a breath and relax when needed at school.
There are barely any benches and tables on campus and they become filled up in a flash as soon as lunch starts. By the time students race to the cafeteria to grab a bite, they have no time to venture and find somewhere to sit. A lot of students simply end up sitting on the floor and pavement, laying in the grass or standing the whole time when they eat and chat with friends.
It’s not very comfortable, especially when it’s really hot or cold outside. The issue is gonna become even bigger when winter comes along and rain starts pouring. There must be more seats in the future due to the increase of incoming students. The new classrooms are coming soon as well so new seating is essential.
A policy that makes this issue hit even harder is the hallway one. With the hallway rule, no students are able to just stand and talk to their friends inside. This is really unfortunate because students want to get away from the weather conditions such as heat in the summer months.
Some teachers do open their rooms up to students at lunch, allowing them to make-up unfinished work or just sit and have great conversations with their friends or groupmates. But now admin are being stricter on who is allowed in the classrooms during lunch. Students have to receive a written pass from that teacher to sit in their room which is not as simple as last year where you could just show up.
Sitting in the cafeteria is also an option but it’s almost impossible to get a table for you and your friends. By the time you’ve been through the lunchline, all of the tables have already been claimed by those who brought lunch from home. It is an unfair situation because students who can’t afford to bring their own lunches basically don’t even get the opportunity to sit inside the cafeteria.
This problem doesn’t affect upperclassmen as much as lowerclassmen due to the fact that they have off-campus privileges during lunch. Nonetheless, if you are upperclassman and you are ineligible to leave during lunch for whatever reason, you are in the same boat as the rest.
A solution for this issue doesn’t have to be expensive either. Picnic tables or recycled material benches can be reused to make seats. It could be done by the ASB, funded by SP boosters or maybe even local companies volunteering or raising money to build them. It would be a fun project that benefits everyone involved.
School is already stressful as is for teenagers, finding a place to sit at lunch should be the least of their worries.
