School events can be some of the most exciting aspects of high school, mainly because planned events allow students to meet others and make the most of their high school experience. However, at times, events can be repetitive or boring, which can lead to disorganized fundraisers or dull rallies.
Specific steps and elements should be taken into consideration when coordinating these events, such as what students want out of the event and what the organizer is trying to promote to the school or place in which the event is being held. Regardless of whether events are primarily administrative-based, they should still make the effort to seek out students and ask them what they want.
According to Brad Hunter, Vice President and Operations Hero, “Streamlining After-Hours Events in Independent Schools: The Power of Event Management Solutions,” he makes the point that communication and collaboration are one of the most critical aspects of planning and it is relatively easy to be misguided. “Effective communication among event organizers, participants and support staff is crucial.”
One of the most important aspects of organizing should include students from different groups. Suppose an organizer isn’t aware of what the people around them want. In that case, they won’t be able to organize something that properly accommodates all interests—for example, students involved in a musical class or those engaged in sports.
Hunter also mentions that an essential aspect of planning also includes recognizing what the people want. Having students who only represent one social group, such as Associated Student Body, does not allow everyone to share their ideas and what they want to see in events and does not allow a planner to truly understand what students wish to see because they are only looking at a minority.
School events don’t have to revolve around specific sports or events but can include a variety of activities.
An example of such activities can consist of a talent show, where individuals who enjoy performing can participate, as well as collaborate with students who enjoy art and have the drive to lead a class that can help their peers tap into their artistic potential.
These are just ideas but the most important thing is to have diverse ideas so that everyone feels included and has a space where they can self-express.
Another crucial aspect of efficient planning should include proper promotion. This includes social media and physical promotion, like flyers for students and posters to put on walls.
It would also be beneficial for planners to include incentives for students. Including aspects like this allows individuals to get excited and even look forward to events if there is something that would motivate them to participate and attend.
