Hair raising action ensues as you take control of a courageous warrior, purging an alternate dimension of unrementing horrors, while travelling between cathedrals, keeps, castles, and advanced military bases.
All of these parts are integral to quake’s design, being one of the first fully three dimensional video games developed by ID software from 1994 to 1996, released as of June 22 of that year. Quake with it’s revolutionary three dimensional engine and competitive multiplayer mode paved the way for prolific first-person shooters such as Valve’s half-life, Epic Games unreal tournament, and various other games of the past 25 years.
Quake on release was universally well reviewed by critics and was considered to be a pinnacle moment for transcending the first-person medium in video games offering unparalleled verticality and combat, receiving various awards of that year.
However, with quake obviously showing its age in the modern era of gaming and being often considered archaic due to its simplistic story and systems, as well as the campaign being usually forgotten due to a simple forgettable narrative that holds almost no real agency or engagement from the player. With these worries addressed, how does quake hold up within the modern age? Especially with the improvements and changes made by the recent remaster of quake, tailored towards current consoles.
This enhanced version of quake was predominantly developed by the recently founded, as of 2012, NightDive Studios, known for the recent re-release of the doom series, blood, turok, and the currently still under development, system shock remastered. The enhanced version of quake includes all original four campaign episodes condensed into two solitary episodes. These being “Scourge of Armagon,” and “Dissolution of Eternity”.
The enhanced version of quake also includes the all new episodes, “ Dimension of The Past ” and “Dimension of the Machine.” Developed by Machine Games, who are best known for the modern adaptation of the wolfenstein Series for ID software. These new episodes include all of the new amenities that apply to the older episodes, such as remastered character models, improved field of view, audio, dynamic lighting, and widescreen support. Machine Games pushed the quake engine to its limits in this new expansion of quake, creating truly remarkable set pieces with smooth and elaborate geometry.
Coupled with the all new levels provided by the designers at Machine Games, are community made servers for the classic deathmatch mode, and all new cooperative campaign. These multiplayer facets can be enjoyed on console online or through split-screen, and includes cross-play, allowing for friends across various platforms to enjoy the game together.
Quake Enhanced edition is a brief yet replayable blast from the past that offers plenty of quality of life alterations that improve upon core aspects while creating new ones that are welcomed additions. Players can expect to traverse maze-like structures inspired by cosmic horror, and spage age military bases. Fighting formidable foes with an iconic roster of weapons, alone, with friends, or against each other. ’
