A fan favorite Pokemon game, “Pokemon FireRed” and “Pokemon LeafGreen”, which are two versions of the same game with slight differences in creatures which can be found in the wild, was brought to the Nintendo Switch family for the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon series on Feb. 27, 2026. Many fans and non-fans believed this to be a new way to get some quick cash from those trying to relive their childhood, as Nintendo had promised to bring the console the game originally debuted on to Nintendo Online later this year with many of its titles. After a few weeks since its release, it seems the backlash against this release has mostly quieted down, but many are wondering, is it worth the price to buy this game, to try and replay a classic, or would it be better to save your cash for something else.
In “Pokemon FireRed” and “Pokemon LeafGreen”, you play through the setting of the Kanto region, with the same story as the “Pokemon Red” and “Pokemon Blue” games earlier in the series but with upgraded graphics and sprites, as well as some new post-game content, which was very impressive for its original release, though, with a Kanto remake on the Switch already, it would be mostly for older fans and people who played these games previously to play again on the current Nintendo consoles to relive their childhood.
For newer fans of this game, this can be a first experience with the Kanto region of the Pokemon setting, and many fans, new and old, would agree that this is a good game to start with for new fans, due to its simplicity and easy to explore setting, with a newer style, despite it being a remake of the first games of the series, and this new rerelease makes it more accessible to new fans which don’t have the chance to play it one the original console which is cool to see that it can be played without an illegal emulator.
These older games are often considered high quality compared to more recent games, which makes porting “Pokemon FireRed” and “Pokemon LeafGreen” to new consoles a strategic play on Nintendo’s part, which they know people will buy because it is Pokemon, of course people will buy it. After much digging it can be seen that these games are worthwhile on the newer generation of consoles, as the graphics are better and easier to see on the Nintendo Switch consoles compared to the Gameboy Advance which these games originally released on.
As has already been brought up, the games seem to be a bit pricey, however, this isn’t really the case. The games which were released had cost about 20 dollars when they were first released in America in 2006, which makes their $30 price tag 20 years later pretty good for players, as it would cost about $32.40 in today’s money if it was still being made and sold for the original console by Nintendo today, due to how inflation works.
These games are generally good value compared to how much Nintendo usually charges for their games, especially their remakes or ports from older consoles. The price and quality are the two factors which people tend to focus on, but it is otherwise a perfectly fine game and purchase if you have the time to pour into the game for the first time, or are coming back to the game after many years to relive the original feeling which these games offered when they first released.
