Learning criteria, in most cases, have continued to stay unchanged over the years. People find it easier to live by the same standards and expectations that previous generations have but it is important that things change to match the times. As the world continues to advance, learning requirements should be molded to match life in the future so that progress in the world doesn’t come to a stop.
One of the biggest changes that the world is advancing in at a high speed is Artificial Intelligence. AI has become something that is used often in daily life and has begun to change the way the world is run. More and more jobs are integrating AI use and have even made it a tool for people to use. Even some schools have begun teaching their students the correct way to use AI so that they don’t completely exploit it.
But even with this knowledge, many schools still try to completely forbid the use of AI in student and teacher work. They believe that students are only using it to get out of actually doing their work and that it disrupts their ability to learn. While this is not completely wrong, they shouldn’t be forbidding its use completely. If daily life outside of school has begun to include AI use more regularly, schools should be teaching students how to use it properly.
Rather than allowing the use of AI, they continue to have students read old textbooks with information that may have been important at the time but no longer holds that value. AI holds a large expanse of information that is much easier for students to access compared to having to search through multiple pages of information. If the use of this tool could be mingled with learning topics in school, less time would be taken from students’ lives and they would learn how to use it dependably.
Technology, besides AI, has also become more widely used in the world. Most schools try to keep students using things from the past when they really should be helping them learn to use the technology that will be integrated into their future jobs and lives. As life continues to advance and change, so should the criteria students learn. School is their guide to the future and they should understand things from their time. A good example of this would be the internet. Teachers expect their students to learn everything on their own when they have access to the internet. Students still shouldn’t use it for the answers to everything but should be taught how to operate it in a way where they can learn from it just as equally as any other practice.
There is also a change in the significance of certain jobs and information. Some things taught in schools in the past may have been important at the time but have become outdated. Certain jobs are becoming more important and some are being left in the past. Using the same criteria from when things were different won’t prepare students for the world ahead of them and only the world behind them. If schools can’t advance their instruction, life will not advance and the world will be slowed in its progress.
Learning needs to be modeled around the future and how the world is expected to advance. If people expect school criteria to stay the same, they can’t expect the world to continue to change and become more developed. Children are the ones who will make change happen in the world and they can’t be predicted to do so without understanding their lives from their own current time.
