Five years since its last album, the band Deftones has returned to its roots with the band’s signature sound of heavily aggressive music.
“Private Music” marks the band’s 10th studio album with it getting a lot of traction and praise for its mix of shoegaze and classic Deftones mix.
They experiment with new experimental textures such as their unique vocal performances and synth-heavy tracks. The album shows themes of identity, transformation, and emotional struggle throughout its lyrics and beats throughout the songs. Some songs whose lyrics express the themes of transformation and overcoming personal struggles are “Ecdysis” and “Mental Dream.”
Some of the lyrics in those songs that identify that theme are “Searching for a solace recreated far beyond of what exists”, “Watch it cut through acreage dividing, and its spiraling entirely again.”
The song “Souvenir” sticks out with some lyrics striking listeners. Those include the phrases “I’ll keep loving you form space, embracing our time of discovery”, “You descend to ground again, the porch light will fade and die”, “as you drift out in space, in time, we will reunite again”, and “We gaze at the night, we own it, its divine, we ride.” Another very enjoyable song on the album is “Infinite Source.” It has a similar vibe as the song “Hole in the Earth” from the album “Saturday Night.” It fits perfectly into the slowdive category, but also has a little rock in it that is nice to listen to.
The vocals in the album, done by Chino Moreno, are some of his best. That’s especially true in the songs “Locked Club” and “Departing Body.”
The album is most similar to their album “Saturday Night” released in 2006. They both have a very hard, slowdive vibe and alot of vocal riffs from Moreno. Nick Raskulinecz co-produced the album. The album was praised for its refined production and it is an album that can be played on repeat.
Another thing that stands out is the album’s cover art. It went along with the most of their album covers, which have animals on them. The snake on the cover tied into the vibe of the album perfectly. On the topic of the other albums, such as “Diamond Eyes”, “Saturday Night Wrist” and “White Pony.” The question “Does it compare to the other albums?” has been going around. It does. It is some of their best music in a while. Another very enjoyable thing about this album is how this album allowed each band member to showcase their abilities. Their abilities and Moreno’s vocals really tied the album together. His performance on “Private Music” has to be some of his best work yet, and hopefully, fans hear more albums like this in the near future.
