Computer AI bots like ChatGPT have become increasingly common among students in schools as of late. It is not hard to see how this could damage the education of those using it in the long run because of how it works.
AI’s, like the one mentioned above, work by allowing people to input a prompt and the bot will write an essay based off of it that the person can then turn in and get credit for.
This hinders the writing skills that kids are taught within schools and the earlier kids start using it the worse their writing skills will end up. Being able to write well is a basic skill that is necessary not only throughout college, but for many jobs as well. Being able to do research on a topic and write a paper about it is something that is often done in numerous jobs and fields, so being unable to do this will harm a person’s ability to find a job in the future.
If students rely on AI to write their essays and research papers for them then they will not be developing the skills that they need in order to thrive in the future.
By blocking the root of the issue on school computers, many students will be unable to use AI and will be forced to actually do their work. If schools continue to slack and allow AI use on school computers then they are risking the education of their students.
If students need help then they should be asking their teachers for advice, not an AI on their computer that will do all the work for them. There is no learning to be done from that and nothing helpful that comes from it.
That is why it is important for school faculty and staff to keep a watchful eye on their students to ensure that they are not using AI bots to do their work.
There is the argument that banning AI will not do much because students can just use the AI on their phones and then copy and paste it into google classroom in order to get the assignment completed. This can be fixed though if staff use plagiarism reports on each assignment that is turned in
These reports will prove that AI is being used because AI usually copies the information of the given prompt from other websites and is unable to paraphrase it in a natural way like people can.
This means that schools can still effectively ban AI use on computers and in general, making sure that students are doing their assigned work.
While it is understandable that some students may use AI’s to do their work because they are busy and have many other assignments to do, it is still unreasonable.
Students must learn how to not only effectively manage their time in order to get all of their assignments completed, but must also not rely on taking the easy way out when it is seen as convenient.
It is important for schools and faculty to see this ongoing issue with AI and ban the use of it before more students become more reliant on it.
