Physical education plays a big role in school. Schools care about student’s health a lot. It also helps develop students’ fitness and social skills, however, making the requirement to dress out for physical education is debatable. There are multiple reasons why students shouldn’t have to dress out.
First off, most schools have a specific dress code that some students cant comply with. Many people have different home lives and not everyone comes from a wealthy family. The physical education set at Sierra Pacific high school was $50, which to a not very good income family is expensive. Not having the right clothes might be uncomfortable and make kids not want to participate. Having a strict dress code for PE isn’t fair to the students who can’t meet the requirements financially.
Making students dress out might make students insecure about their bodies or give them anxiety. Many students suffer from body dysmorphia and making students dress out might make them even more self conscious. Allowing students to wear the clothes they feel most comfortable in might enhance the participation. Also, Students aren’t always kind and make fun of kids who don’t have the same body types as the others. Making kids feel comfortable is very important for mental health because if they feel bad then they will do bad.
If students don’t dress out they will get more time in class to work out. Not changing can save up to 10 minutes of class time. Teachers won’t have to worry about sending kids back to change out because they will already be ready to leave so the workouts can be longer. Teachers can make longer workouts that make kids more healthy.
If students feel better in the clothes they are wearing they will feel good and want to participate in class. If they participate in class they will have better mental and better self esteem.
Yes, some might say that it’s better for students to dress out so they don’t get their clothes smelling like sweat but, students will feel better if they are wearing the clothes they feel comfortable in and will not feel self conscious.
Not everyone has the same body type. So if students wear clothes that fit their body type more, that will make them more willing to be in class and feel good about themself. From experience, people make fun of other people’s bodies if they aren’t the same as everyone else.
Rethinking the requirements for dressing out in physical education can lead to better participation, reduce student body dysmorphia, and a more positive atmosphere. This would provide comfort and personal expression in the clothes students wear. It would provide a positive and engaging environment for students. It would help students with mental and physical health. Encouraging them to wear what they feel comfortable in physical education might allow students to like the class more than if they were told what to wear. It would pave a healthier lifestyle beyond just a school life.
