The Black Student Union at Sierra Pacific High School is having a year mixed with fun, education and cultural learning experiences. Led by Sierra Pacific’s very own student leaders, BSU aims to bring a sense of community and pride to its members. Students of all grade levels are welcome to join and are encouraged to participate in the club’s weekly meetings.
BSU focuses on teaching its members and creating new connections for its students. Tamara Colbert, the club’s treasurer and a junior at SPHS, said the club offers a unique opportunity for students.
“I’m most excited about the opportunity to make new friends and share my culture,” Colbert said.
The club’s diversity plays a key role in their sense of pride.
Kurita Suggs, another junior BSU member, proudly stated, “I’m most proud of the diversity in the club.”
The diversity is reflected in the club’s membership, which has grown greatly over the past year and a half. Students of all races and ethnic backgrounds join BSU for the purpose of learning and making new connections.
New members can expect to find an engaging experience at BSU.
“The new members can expect lots of fun and opportunities to learn about black and minority culture,” Suggs said.
The club has also expanded its activities and fundraising, Colbert said, “I’m proud of the fact that we’re doing more fundraisers and stuff and more activities to get ourselves out there.”
These events aim to bring awareness and unity to the club’s students. Fundraisers help bring attention to the club which attracts new members. The goal is to educate Sierra Pacific’s student body about the culture and history surrounding a majority of the school’s population.
Educational meetings, however, are also a key focus for the club. Alijah Whiting, junior and President of the BSU club expressed her excitement about implementing more educational meetings into the club and extended a warm welcome out to any new students.
“New members can expect to learn so much while also making new friends throughout the year. They will gain lots of memories,” stated Whiting.
Meetings are held on Mondays at lunch in Room 211 with all students welcome to come.
