Marvel released “Black Widow” after a long awaited release of Marvel movies; it was refreshing and it was a good movie, it’s even better that it was viewable in theaters as Covid restrictions have been reduced.
“Black Widow” introduces Florence Pugh as a new character named Yelena who is Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson). They work together to destroy a massive human trafficking ring, whose leader is also planning to take over the world. It’s good to see that Black Widow’s character can live on through her sister after her death in Endgame.
The movie is similar to the typical Marvel movie, it had plenty of action and humor. However, it differs in a way that we’ve never seen before in any previous Marvel movies. It highlights the problems of human trafficking and it highlights how women are put into a position of being lesser than men in society.
The movie is not shy of action, there are several very cool fight scenes with new weapons. The action sometimes had some poor CGI, but overall the movie was packed with intense situations. I think some people frown upon the action in “Black Widow” because they are comparing it to “Black Panther” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which many agree have the best and most intense action.
The movie was made in the conventional Marvel style. Drama. Action. Humor. The scenes were shot well, the lighting was good for the majority of the movie. The lighting felt different from other Marvel movies as the location of the movie took place in a different country, so the creators did a good job at distinguishing the difference between a 1st world country to that of a more barbaric country.
The first downside was that the soundtrack was not the greatest, comparing the soundtrack of “Black Widow” to “Black Panther”’ and “Shang-Chi,” it is very underwhelming. However, criticizing the soundtrack is subjective and is also a bit picky because not every movie is going to have a soundtrack that suits your music taste. Another downside is that you would need to have prior knowledge of the Marvel universe to fully understand the context of the movie, some movies like “Shang-Chi” are separate and become involved with the series as a whole later on, “Black Widow” is not one of those movies.
“Black Widow” is different from the typical Marvel movie because it highlights the tragedies that women experience in the real world. People in poverty, or those in need are taken advantage of and used for sex trafficking. I believe this is one of the only Marvel movies to focus on a real life issue, as obviously we’re not at risk of half of our population vanishing because some purple guy snapped his fingers in a funny looking glove. Overall, I recommend this movie to anyone who has watched the previous Marvel movies, I don’t think it’s necessary to watch it for future movies but it does provide some context about Black Widow’s backstory. Like every Marvel movie, there’s plenty of humor. From Yelena mocking Black Widow’s posing during her fights, to Yelena and Black Widow’s father reliving his glory days. The movie does a good job at combining serious issues but also lightening the mood with humor to not make audiences uncomfortable.
