Snow, mountains, and fun. These are what Adventure Club should have been able to encounter and see on their field trip to China Peak Mountain Resort in Lakeshore on Jan. 29. Students and staff who happily planned to go were excited for this adventure. They were not expecting that their bus driver, who would bring all participants to the destination, would call in sick. The announcement of the field trip being officially canceled has made many, whether they were supposed to go or not, shocked and upset.
Christa Smith, the leader of Adventure Club at Sierra Pacific High School, was optimistic and excited for the field trip to China Peak Mountain Resort on Jan. 29, but she was disappointed that it had to be canceled. Lasting from 5:30 a.m. all the way to 6 p.m., the field trip was supposed to last almost 13 hours. The fee was not directly stated, but according to Smith, “the fees were paid by doing a fundraiser.” A total of 58 Adventure Club students from all grade levels and staff were also excited to go on the field trip and enjoy the scenery and experience outdoor activities, such as skiing and snowboarding. Now, they can’t go due to a sick bus driver; it was not specifically announced how the driver got ill, however. Since the field trip got canceled, the students and staff won’t be able to experience this unique leisure and adventure.
Madison Brunell, a student at Sierra Pacific High School and a member of the club, is one of the 58 people that planned to go to the ski resort who expressed their disappointments toward the cancellation. She and others had wasted a few hours prior preparing for the trip, just to receive the news that it was canceled because the driver called in sick.
Brunell said that “it was a bit frustrating” since she and others who were going “had to wake up early for the trip.” Luckily, she “was able to go with [her] parents to another ski resort,” thus making her less disappointed and upset about the canceled trip. Not everyone who planned to go went to a ski resort like her, though. The rest of the students and staff had to go to school sleep-deprived, unprepared for just another school day. Since they had to wake up early to prepare for the trip, eventually finding out that the field trip was canceled before school, they would have lost sleep and would not have been fully ready for a school day.
The announcement of the field trip to China Peak Mountain Resort being canceled has impacted students and staff who were supposed to go and those who weren’t. Both Smith, the leader and organizer of the club and trip, and Brunell, a student that was willing to go, are just two of many who expressed their opinions and disappointments. The statement was unexpected and people were not ready for it. The trip to the ski resort will not be made up; it is officially canceled and no secondary plans were made. This field trip held a lot of opportunities for students and staff but now those opportunities are lost forever.
