Tate McRae's new album was nominated for multiple Grammys
Showstopping. Breathtaking. Pop sensation Tate McRae dropped her third studio album, “So Close To What”. Hitting number one charts, McRae’s album has left the world in shock over her starstrucking dancing and lyrical mastermind. With 16 songs, McRae told her story of relationship hardships, friendships and the process of finally moving on. The album debuted Feb. 21, 2025. The album couldn’t have come alive without help from her producers, Grant Boutin, Rob Bisel, Emile Haynie, Blake Slatkin, llya, Ryan Tedder and Tyler Spry.
McRae’s top pop hits all reached the charts including her top songs, “Sports Car” and “Its Ok Im Ok”. Between the lyrics and the insane beats, Mcrae and her producers have made hits that will be stuck in your head for weeks. Her alter ego, who she named Tatiana, is what she says drives her to make these types of songs, which would usually be out of comfort zone. This being only her third studio album and her only being 21 years old has people shocked with her amount of talent. “Miss possessive”, “Dear God”, “Sports Car”, “Its Ok Im Ok” and “2 Hands”, are all songs that share a similar vibe, with an upbeat soundtrack it truly makes anyone listening, want to get up and dance. Her pop beats have a new edgy sound to it that has people begging for more music. Mcrae’s new sense of confidence through her music is something that has really drawn people in. From the catchy music videos from “Its Ok Im Ok” and “Sports Car”, the singer really showcased a new side to her.
With this new persona, Tatiana brought some collaborators onto her album, who really helped bring this new energy to life. “Blood On My Hands” featuring Flo Milli is the third studio track on her album and has fans in love with this catchy song. Singing about moving on from a boy and him hating her for it, she gives people relatable music. Another artist she collabed with is her boyfriend, The Kid LAROI. The song “I Know Love” is a sweet love song that the two sing together. Their voices really mend together well and give the internet a look into their relationship which is exactly what the tabloids wanted.
“Nostalgia”, “Like I do”, “Means I care”, “Greenlight” and “Signs” are five tracks from “So Close To What” that all share a similar sound. Going back to her roots of true teenage girl heartbreak and emotions, these four songs resemble her old music. When she used to create little songs on Youtube from random word generators. Her music has come a long way from then, but she still has found a way to capture those emotions into such impactful songs. Her song Like I Do ties back into her previous album with a song called We’re Not Alike. Which she sings about the struggles of a female friendship.
The song that has had a huge impact on people and has gone especially viral on Tiktok is “Purple Lace Bra”. This song is for every girl who has been used by a man for their body and is finally realizing they deserve more. Mcrae explained her feelings behind making the song was after releasing her previous album Think Later that took off after she had a mainstream hit, “Greedy”. This was her first time releasing a more provocative song and it had the internet going wild. She explained how she felt she was only seen for body after the song came out and this has millions of girls relating to her words she sings. Another Tiktok viral audio came from her songs “Revolving Door” and “No I’m Not In Love”. With millions of people listening and recording themselves to these hits, it has really helped take off her career as a performer. Her song “Siren Sounds” was originally leaked before the album was released and it had fans going crazy over it. She added this song to the track list after the album was released because of the amount of people begging for it.
The Canadian singer is even comparable to the one and only Britney Spears. With her insane stage performance and singing ability her work really does reflect on a new modern day Britney. Between her dancing skills and overall way to capture the crowd through her look, it resembles the way Spears used to perform on stage. The lights, the effects, the background dancers, all come together and really create a show worth watching. And though their looks may be different, their fame is similar. Her career has come a long way in the past three years and continues to grow everyday.
